Hi, I’m Doug Hoang, and today I’m sharing a behind-the-scenes look at how I’m fine-tuning the Cybertruck Sunglass Holder & Center Console. My workspace may be chaotic, but it’s where innovation comes to life.
The Prototyping Process
At the core of my work is 3D printing. My setup includes several printers running around the clock, bringing various prototypes to life. This stage is critical for testing different geometries, functionality, and fit—all without the high costs of full-scale manufacturing.
Iteration After Iteration
Prototyping is rarely a straightforward journey. I’ve created dozens of versions, tweaking each one to overcome specific challenges. Some early designs didn’t clip securely onto the Cybertruck’s screen or lacked the refined aesthetics I envisioned.
Challenges in Design
One of the trickiest parts was ensuring a seamless fit. The holder had to attach securely without causing any rattling or requiring complicated installation. I even experimented with various mounting geometries, some of which failed under stress. These missteps, while frustrating, were invaluable in perfecting the final design.

Understanding 3D Printing
For those new to 3D printing, I use FDM machines. These work like high-precision hot glue guns, extruding molten plastic layer by layer to create each part. This approach is ideal for rapid prototyping because it’s both fast and economical.
One of my recent prints, the holder’s tray, took over 20 hours to complete. It includes strategically placed holes to avoid HVAC interference, ensuring optimal airflow.
